Look to Chapter 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29 for examples of art across the world that speaks to cultural practices, beliefs (spiritual, religious), politics and ceremony. Choose 5 artworks that illustrate the culture and people that made them. Describe these 5 artworks in detail. How do the objects illustrate the cultural practices and beliefs? Explain how these objects represent historic circumstances under which they were made.

~800-1000 words, include images and captions of the works you select. If you visited the museum, feel free to speak to the objects you may have seen during that visit.

Consider some of these questions in your analysis:

Discuss the formats and content of Chinese painting. Describe the impact of Zen Buddhism on Japanese arts. What distinctive designs and styles developed throughout Oceania? How were the visual arts of the Pacific cultures connected to music, dance, and oral literature? What are the common traits of the art of different Native American peoples? What are some impacts of the arrival of Europeans in Mesoamerica? How does traditional African art differ from Western art of the nineteenth century?

MUSEUM VISIT ASSIGNMENT extra credit (Due by 12/15):

If you did not make it to the trip but you go on your own to the museum you can still receive extra credit (up to +5pts). Just create a post on the blog that includes images from your trip and choose 3 works of art from any gallery or multiple galleries throughout the museum and write a few sentences about each one, why you chose it, why it is interesting and how it fits into our art history conversations (time period/eras, styles, content).

Response to the Gallery Visit - Feast & Famine

Please recall your gallery visit to the exhibition Feast & Famine and curator's tour of the exhibition by Anonda Bell. What are some themes that seem to run throughout the exhibition: social, political, personal, historical, contemporary, economic, etc.

Using the Stokstad textbook as a resource think of artwork from the course thus far that feel connected to the artwork in the exhibition. Choose a theme from the exhibition that feels compelling to you. Choose 2-3 works in the exhibition that fit this theme. Describe these works and how they illustrate the idea you have chosen. Then choose 2-3 artworks from the art history text that fit into this theme. Focus some research on the historic artworks and the artworks in the exhibition in order to dig deeper into the meaning of these works.

Please write a short description of each of the artworks you have chosen and how they seem related in your grouping. What are the subjects, messages and media of the works? How do the artists address socio-political subjects in the exhibited pieces? Please describe how the work addresses these issues and the theme(s) you are highlighting. Please reference your readings from class when appropriate.

~500 words Include citations of the class readings in your post (Stokstad) if appropriate. Please be sure to include at least four images of the works you selected. Include links to any external sources. See checklist below for other issues to consider and include in your post (see Post 2).

Post 2 Renaissance (due 10/17 by 11:59pm)

The Renaissance was a period of European history that began in Italy in the 15th century and spread to the rest of Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. The feudal society of the Middle Ages was transforming into a society dominated by central political institutions, with an urban, commercial economy and expansion of education, the arts, and music.

Please choose four artists and their work that illustrate the changes and developments in the arts during this period. Choose artists that help define the major visual hallmarks of the time period. Describe the artists’ work, the patronage system, the subjects and the meaning of the works and how they were received, viewed and valued. What is the meaning of the works based on subject, themes and symbols? What is the cultural, economic and political context in which these works were made? Be sure to apply the vocabulary and concepts relevant to the art of this time.

~1000 words. Include citations of the class readings in your post (Stokstad). Please be sure to include at least four images. Include links to any external sources. See checklist below for other issues to consider and include in your post.

Refer to this checklist for guidance on the post structure and expectations:

-You should reference the Stokstad textbook extensively as well as citing any other resources.

-Please include in-body citations of the reading and other sources (author, pg)

-Include a brief "works cited" at the bottom of the post with the textbook and any other readings you are citing from. You can use APA, MLA or Chicago formats for citation

-Images should have captions. What is the image? Why is it included? Is it referenced in your text?

-Edit: grammar, spelling, sentence and paragraph structure.

-Links must link -please make sure your links LINK. Why is the link included? Think about how the hyperlink is used online. Integrate your links into your writing. They should augment the information provided.

-Images must be sized correctly and should fit in the body of the blog.

-Check your formats in general. Spacing issues, indentations, font sizes, are your images appearing correctly?

Artist History: Subject and Meaning

Using your textbook (or research other texts or online resources if you have not yet received your textbook), find and research an artist from any genre between 1400 and 1600. Chose one work of art (ex. painting, sculpture) that you find compelling. Share an image of the work on the blog with a short description of the subject of the work. In a short post of 2-3 paragraphs address the following: In what genre was the work made? What is the subject and meaning of the work? What are some biographical, cultural or political issues from the time the artist made the work that may help analyze the meaning of the work to us today?

**If you have trouble posting to the blog, bring in the assignment as a print out and be sure to hand it in to me.**
